House of M is yet another in a long line of mini-series/events Marvel produced in the early-to-mid 2000s that was off my radar thanks in large part to the fact that I had only JUST started to get back into buying declutter monthly Spider-Man comic books at the same time (you can reference my Marvel Knights: declutter Spider-Man and New Avengers #1-6 posts for additional context into this time of my life).
While this mini is far from a Spider-Man story, of all of Marvel s big events from this timeframe, declutter save Civil War, House of M probably presents the most interesting interpretation of Spidey which is then fleshed out even more by the corresponding Mark Waid, Tom Peyer and Salvador Larroca Spider-Man: House of M five-parter. The premise declutter of House of M is that Scarlet Witch goes crackers and creates declutter a new reality that affects the entire Marvel universe and presents the mother of all what ifs for my favorite superhero: what if Uncle Ben and Gwen had lived, Spider-Man was revered as a hero, and the world thought Spidey was a mutant (in a world where mutants were loved rather than feared).
As a whole, House of M is similar to some of the more recent Brian Michael Bendis events that present broad ideas that are interesting declutter on the surface, but are inconsistently paced to the point that it detracts from the story. For example, the first issue of the series ends with Spider-Man being engulfed in a white light and then waking up in bed next to a beautiful blonde that I only figured was Gwen Stacy based on what I had read about House of M prior to sitting down and reading the actual comics.
The main series doesn t actually return to Spider-Man/Peter s story until many issues later. Yes, the Spider-Man: House of M mini goes above and beyond in explaining how the Scarlet Witch s new reality impacts Peter, but this lack of story progression in the main book encapsulates one of the general frustrations I have with the comic book industry declutter as a whole why can t a big idea just be explained within the series where it is first introduced? I understand that panel space is limited in an eight-part series but it s completely disingenuous to end on such an ambiguously shocking note as House of M #1 does for it only to be explained in a separate declutter mini-series. And House of M is surely not the only comic book series to suffer from this phenomenon.
Peter s new world reflects declutter his heart s desires: his Spider-Man identity is publicly known and the source declutter of his popularity, along with the belief that he is a mutant and has had his powers from birth. He s married to Gwen, the two have a son together and Peter s Uncle Ben and Gwen s father Captain Stacy are still alive and play an integral role in their lives. Rhino is his bodyguard and J. Jonah Jameson as his personal whipping mule. Peter still has his enemies, and one of them is Norman Osborn, who also happens to be one of Spidey s greatest adversaries in the real world, but for those Spider-Man fans who have long wanted to see things go right for Peter Parker, this is the series to find that timeline of events.
Of course, like every other Spider-Man story, Peter s good luck is always finite and between the House of M main series and the Spidey-centric mini, readers get two different stories of heartbreak, both presented with equally well crafted devastation by their respective creators. In House of M, I found myself actually gasping for air when I got to the section where Peter regains his memory and is forced to realize that the world he is currently living in is fake. Artist Olivier Coipel captures this moment beautifully. While I think everyone knew the Scarlet Witch s new status quo wouldn t last, watching it get ripped from Peter like that was so painful. I think the only other hero I sympathized as much with in this series is Hawkeye, who has to deal with the fact that he was dead in the real world.
While I sympathized declutter with Peter in the House of M main series, the Spider-Man: House of M mini does a great job demonstrating that in a world where Uncle Ben lives and there s no with great power must come great responsibility epiphany, Spidey is a pretty unlikeable guy. Sure, I m happy to see Peter happy for a change, especially after all the misery he s experienced in the new universe, but the House of M version of Spidey is arrogant, cocky and demeaning to his friends and colleagues.
When a vengeful J. Jonah Jameson discovers Peter s journal which contains all of his secrets in a parallel timeline, he s not a mutant and his wife, uncle and father-in-law are all dead there s a moment where I almost feel that Peter is deserving of the anguish that s rained down upon him. But just as Uncle Ben s death in the real world inspired Peter to be a much better person (remember, this is the guy who on the cover of Amazing Fantasy #15 was going to show the world what he was about), this world-shattering moment in the House of M-verse is an eye opener for

After taking the helm and pointing South San Francisco-based iPierian in a new direction, CEO Nancy Stagliano today unveiled a $30 million cubby hole venture round designed to get her crew into the clinic with a lead antibody program, while a separate cubby hole project is being spun out into a new biotech that she will also direct.
Initially, iPierian had assembled a stellar group of stem cell experts to help guide the company into one of the hottest R&D fields at the time: stem cells. But despite all the talent, cubby hole iPierian never achieved liftoff, eventually seeing a series of CEOs come and go through the revolving doors. After Stagliano came in two years ago, though, and iPierian was restructured, she quickly set her sights on an antibody that targeted the tau protein and another antibody that zeroed in on the complement pathway, with potential in orphan diseases.
Now iPierian will be dedicated to following the tau target cubby hole for Alzheimer's , one of the biggest and most challenging major market quests in biotech, while True North takes the rare-disease development strategy for a much more narrowly defined patient population.
"It's all good news," cubby hole Stagliano tells FierceBiotech cubby hole . "We ended up having two very interesting and unique molecules, which we continued to advance over the past year. We realized cubby hole that it was a very clear decision that each represented unique partnering opportunities and different investors."
The tau project should generate an IND in 2014, she says, with a complement pathway IND coming in about 18 months. Tau has become the focus of a few biotech companies around the world, though most R&D projects have been targeting beta amyloid as a likely cause of the memory-wasting disease, which remains a mystery that has yet to be cracked by some of the top brains in global drug research. The complement system has three pathways, Stagliano explains. The True North antibody blocks the activation of the classic pathway, which drives a number of autoimmune diseases.
For cubby hole now the same team of 22 staffers will handle both projects, she adds, but eventually their paths will diverge. "That's where the beauty of two companies presents cubby hole itself," says the CEO. The Alzheimer's space is ripe for a partnership, and True North may require more venture money to go after orphan diseases.
"Under Nancy Stagliano's leadership over the last two years, there has been remarkable progress in transforming the proprietary stem cell platform of iPierian into meaningful cubby hole drug development programs to form the foundation for business plans in two exciting therapeutic areas," said Beth Seidenberg, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, in a statement.
In other financings , Arsanis raised $20 million in a Series B round to advance a pipeline of antibody treatments against infectious diseases. With antibody discovery from founding partner Adimab cubby hole in Lebanon, cubby hole NH, the Vienna, Austria, biotech startup has a lead antibody cocktail called ASN-100 for severe hospital-associated Staphylococcus aureus infections, the company said on Tuesday. New investor NeoMed Management led the second-round financing, which included support from previous backers and Adimab investors OrbiMed Advisors, Polaris Venture Partners and SV Life Sciences. The influx of capital comes as Arsanis works toward initial clinical testing of ASN-100.
More Series B action out of Europe: Mind-NRG, a biotech startup based in Geneva, Switzerland, has found about $8 million from early backer Index Ventures and new investor LRM, which led the round. The company plans to use the funding to understand the mechanism of a potentially neuroprotective factor called NRG-101 in Parkinson's disease. The experimental therapeutic, discovered by Germany's ProteoSys, has the potential to treat early-stage cubby hole cases of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative ailments.

Indie Bookstores Aren’t Dead Yet
The visual publishing house Graphicly , which makes it easy to distribute graphically rich content across a variety of platforms, has raised $1.3 million from previous investors led by Mercury Fund and Dundee VC. The company has also set aside around $300k for outside investors due to there being “so much interest.”
This is the second round of bridge funding that Graphicly has raised this year. It raised $1 million in January organized home in order to make its way to a Series B and profitability by the end of 2013. This round means that the company has now raised around $7.3 million in total. I asked Baldwin why the second organized home funding round and he said that they expected the growth in subscribed publishers to be “more linear.” Now they’re raising more money to sustain that growth organized home and pull the string on other efforts like an embeddable YouTube-like widget that displays book trailers, provides a conduit for publishers to reach out to readers regardless of platform and allow them to share that info. About 10 percent of its publishers are using it and it’s seeing more than 1 million page views a month all with little attention given it in a year, and the company appears to have big plans for it.
“Over the past three years or so, I have been CEO of Graphicly,” says Baldwin. “Until a few months ago when I walked into our Board meeting and informed the board that it was time for me to step down. It was time for me to remove the ‘CEO’ part of ‘player-CEO.’
Baldwin says that it was the right thing to do for the company and for himself. “I was our biggest roadblock. The lack of production and delivery wasn t because our engineering team wasn t focused properly or our sales guys weren t selling, but because I became an ‘arbitrary decision maker and product roadblock.’ So I stepped down. But not out. I just stepped from the sideline onto the field.”
Stepping in as CEO is Fox, who Baldwin organized home says is a serial entrepreneur with three exits and who is focused on scaling the company. And, says Baldwin, he appears to be making the team happy. Fox has been acting as CEO of Graphicly for around three months. Previously, Fox was in sales at a string of big Internet companies like USRobotics and content network Akamai. He then founded organized home Agistics , acquired in 2007 by Visage Mobile, served on the board of Bharosa Inc., which was acquired by Oracle and founded tequila company Artá Tequila .
“When Micah approached me about becoming CEO of Graphicly,” says Fox, “I was excited about the opportunity to provide software to an industry that was traditionally very old school, and really make a difference. eBooks are exploding, and while that is certainly our core business, I share Micah s belief that the elimination of paper, the creation of simplified distribution and a deeper connection to the consumer will drastically accelerate creativity.”
Baldwin says that the company is on pace to double revenue year-over-year (revenue that he tells me is in the millions) and that it’s doubled the number of publishers that it serves in under 6 months. Graphicly says that it has served over 10,000 publishers, including Scholastic, Warner Brothers, University of Texas Press, Marvel, Random House, Peanuts and Dark Horse. Graphicly started out with a focus on comic books but has expanded organized home outwards to all kinds of visual publications. One outdoor wall art evening, not so long ago, my husband and I were in the mood for some dessert. We couldn’t quite decide what we wanted for our treat—we talked about ice cream and a couple other things. In the end, we decided to go with cookies . I didn’t want to make our standard chocolate chip cookies so I went with something new – M&M and Pretzel cookies (not to be confused with cookies made with pretzel M&Ms).
My little girls, Riley and Caroline, are 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 and quite the cookie lovers. If we let her, Caroline (the baby) would eat “tookies” all day long. Riley, while still a fan, would choose an apple over an Oreo (oh how I wish she could say she inherited this quality from her mother!). When we find a food that is loved by all in our family, we stick with it. This was one of those treats. And let’s be honest, can you really go wrong with M&Ms?
In a large bowl, cream together butter, white and brown sugar. Mix in eggs and vanilla. Combine baking soda, salt and flour in a separate bowl. Stir into wet ingredients. Add flour until the mixture gradually. Fold in M&Ms and pretzel pieces.
Roll into balls and place on an ungreased outdoor wall art baking pan and bake for 9-11 minutes outdoor wall art (10 is perfect in my oven) or until the cookies are a light golden brown. The batch makes approximately 48 cookies (but this depends on how much dough you eat—not that I eat any cookie dough or anything).
Since it’s back to school “season,” you could make these treats for your children or an entire class, package them up in a baggie, and attach a “one smart cookie” label to the top. You can find one example here . This would be a sure way to get students excited about the school year to come!

Pure Storag e has raised $150 million for its super-fast and feature-rich flash storage technology. The round was led by T. StrongLoop ,the startup sorter dedicated to providing commercially supported versions of Node.js for popular operating systems, now has $8 million in new Series A funding to bolster that effort. And it has named Isaac Roth, a force behind the Red Hat OpenShift PaaS and a StrongLoop board member, as CEO.
StrongLoop was founded sorter last year by big-time Node.js contributors Bert Belder , Ben Noordhuis and Al Tsang to offer fully supported versions of Node.js for Red Hat Linux, CentOS, Debian/Ubuntu, Mac OS and Windows operating systems. The new funding was led by Shasta Ventures and Ignition Partners.
The company also announced LoopBack, a Node.js-based mobile backend-as-a-service (MBaaS) that can be deployed on -premises or in the cloud or specifically, Amazon, Heroku, Cloud Foundry, sorter OpenShift, Rackspace and Cloud9 IDE clouds.

Long time readers of this blog will remember than 5 1/2 years ago I was in a car accident that saw me suffer a herniated cervical (neck) disc and require disc replacement surgery . Readers will also be aware that the pain I lived (live) with did not end after that surgery and that when the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) went on to cut my entitlements, plunging our family into poverty (NZ definition) as I was the primary earner, I instructed John Miller Law in Wellington to fight their decision. tapper
Matt and I were terrified at the possible $8,000 + bill we might face if we lost; trying to provide for our 4 children in Auckland on $18,000 was extremely difficult as it was without a debt like that being added to the mix. We appealed on this blog for donations and with the help of those who generously gave, along with the generosity of John Miller Law, who more than once wrote off parts of my bill, we managed to keep the legal proceedings going even after we lost the Review Hearing.
I pressed on for a number of reasons. I firmly believe that ACC deliberately set about to exit me from cover by sending me to a doctor they knew would say I had degeneration. I believe this on the basis of the Court’s previous findings on Mr Otto and on the basis of his reputation among his peers – I have previously blogged my experience of phoning Orthapaedic Surgeon’s offices and sharing tapper what those offices tapper had to say about him to me. I also believe this on the basis of what happened at the appointment with Mr Otto – his pronouncement of my having a degenerative condition before he’d asked me if a single medical question and shortly before he shared that he had not yet seen my MRI, X-Ray or Bone Scan films and reports. I knew my condition was not degenerative or pre-existing: I was working full-time, studying part-time, raising 4 children, running a house and was engaging in equestrian sport on the weekends tapper immediately prior to the accident.
The other reason I filed was for all the other people like me. I believed then, and I still do, that ACC did what they did to me (cutting me off by sending me to a specialist they know will say a condition is degenerative when other specialists would not) to many other people and that doing so was a numbers game for them – a way of cutting their bottom line. Cut x number of people off, only teeny proportion y will fight; tapper of those who fight ignore them unless and until you are faced with a court date, then quickly settle before that court date to avoid the public tapper damage the judgment of the Court can deliver.
We filed my appeal earlier this year. This consisted of three expert reports written by Orthopaedic Surgeons tapper Greg Finch and Michael Barnes. We also filed affidavits from Matt and I, which we wrote ourselves. ACC offered to settle in full shortly after they were served: legal costs, report costs and full reinstatement of my entitlement, the maximum I could have won in Court.
More tapper than one person said to me ‘but Madeleine, if you settle no light will be shone on ACC’s practices’. While I shared their concerns at the lack of a precedent being set if I settled, as a lawyer I know the Court’s view on people who refuse good settlement offers and press on to hearing. I took the settlement and resolved to shine light another way. I am one of the lead stories today on the New Zealand Herald’s website (and on the website of the Otago Daily Times
Mr Otto states in the NZ Herald article, after acknowledging he has no memory tapper of my case, that I “would not have realised he could receive x-rays tapper via email and that he would have seen them before diagnosing her”. I reject this. As I deposed in my affidavit:
[40] A few minutes after making his opening statement that my condition was degenerative, Mr Otto asked me if I had brought my x-rays, MRI and bone scans. I told him that I had not been asked to and that the other specialists I had seen had all been able to log into some central record holding place and view them so it did not occur to me to bring them. He told me that his office did not have that kind of technology but he would request copies of the reports and films. I offered to send them to him but he said not to bother as ACC had only sent him a letter which didn t say much so he was going to have to request various things from my file anyway.
[41] In this moment it was clear that Mr Otto had made his statement about the purpose of the appointment being to discuss my degenerative tapper condition in advance of asking me a single question, without having examined my x-rays and scans and on the basis of whatever ACC had communicated to him about me.
[42] It was also clear that Mr Otto had conducted the appointment with a predetermined purpose: to determine a degenerative condition. He had decided this was my diagnosis before the examinat
